The DFL-Supercup pits the Bundesliga champions against the German Cup winners in a single match, a week before the league restarts. It has one feature the English and French super cups do not: it is not played on neutral ground but at the stadium of one of the two clubs. That changes everything for the viewer, because you get a proper club crowd, its standing terrace and its songs, instead of a ground split down the middle. The trophy has existed since 1987, disappeared for twenty years, and was brought back by the German league in 2010 under its present name. Bayern Munich are the most successful club as of the 2024 edition. If the same club has done the double, the Bundesliga runners-up take the vacant place. For the viewer it is the first real test of the year: reshaped squads, new signings starting, and a trophy at the end of ninety minutes.
