The Eliteserien is Norway's top division, and like its Scandinavian neighbours it runs from April to December rather than August to May: at this latitude, winter leaves no choice. Sixteen clubs contest the title, with Rosenborg as the historic benchmark - fifteen consecutive championships between 1992 and 2004, a run few European leagues have seen - and Bodø/Glimt as the recent phenomenon, a club from a town of eighteen thousand above the Arctic Circle that has become a regular in European group stages. That is exactly where the league turns strange and endearing: it is played on artificial pitches imposed by the climate, under a summer light that never really goes out in June, and in grounds of eight to ten thousand where you can hear the players talking to each other. The soccer is direct and athletic, and Norwegian academies export on a large scale. Matches are played in the Norwegian afternoon or evening, on central European time.
