The European Championship is the second biggest national-team competition in the world, and many find it denser than the World Cup: across twenty-four teams there is almost no dead rubber and very little gap in quality. Held every four years since 1960, it has crowned ten different nations, including surprise winners soccer did not see coming - Denmark in 1992, Greece in 2004. Germany and Spain hold the record, and Spain built here, between 2008 and 2012, the only run of three consecutive major titles in history. Its particular flavour comes from geography: European distances let supporters follow their team in person, so host cities fill with tens of thousands of visitors and the atmosphere spills out of the grounds. For a European viewer it is the only major tournament played in local time, most often in the early evening.
