The FA Trophy is the cup of English soccer that begins where the League ends, and it is played at the hour the professional game gave up: Saturday at three o'clock. In a single round more than seventy ties kick off together, in grounds holding one to three thousand, between clubs whose players have jobs during the week. That kick-off time is not a scheduling detail: it is the hour of all English soccer before television, and it survives here because nobody ever had a reason to move it. For the viewer that means there is nothing to choose and everything to follow at once, exactly as it is on the terraces. A handful of games are played the evening before, under floodlights. The winner lifts the trophy at the end of a run that will have taken the whole season.
