The FAI Cup is the national cup of the Republic of Ireland, open to League of Ireland clubs and to sides from the lower divisions. What makes it particular comes down to the last match: the final is played at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, fifty thousand seats, while those same clubs normally host two to five thousand people. The contrast in scale is the event. A team whose ground fits into a single stand finds itself, on a November afternoon, in front of a crowd ten times the one it knows, in an international arena.
