The Greek Super Cup pits the Super League champions against the Greek Cup winners in a single match. What sets it apart is less its format than the structure of Greek soccer: four clubs - Olympiakos, Panathinaikos, AEK and PAOK - share almost all the honours, so the super cup nearly always puts two of them against each other. It is therefore a national derby by construction, with everything that implies: two sets of fans who know each other well, an old rivalry, and a match that counts for far more than the trophy. It is played on neutral ground, in a city chosen in advance, which takes it out of the three or four stadiums where most of the league is decided. Its date has varied: the competition is not held at the same point of the year from one edition to the next.
