The Liga Pro is Ecuador's top division, and it reads first of all as an opposition between the coast and the mountains: Guayaquil, a port city at sea level, carries Barcelona SC and Emelec; Quito, at nearly three thousand metres, carries LDU and Independiente del Valle. The two worlds do not play the same soccer, and a trip from the coast up to the capital is prepared like a journey. The season runs in two stages followed by a final between the winners, which produces a title decided over two matches rather than by adding up points. The most striking fact of recent years comes down to a single club: Independiente del Valle, whose academy sent Moisés Caicedo and Kendry Páez to Europe and which has won two Copa Sudamericana titles - a model several neighbouring countries are now trying to copy. For a European viewer, matches are played in the Ecuadorian evening, which means the middle of the night in Europe.
