Ligue 2 is France's second division, and it is the league where clubs rebuild rather than merely survive. Eighteen teams compete for two automatic promotions, with third place leading to a play-off against the sixteenth of Ligue 1 - two legs that decide tens of millions of euros and are often played in front of the fullest ground of the season. The division permanently hosts clubs with national or European pasts: Saint-Étienne, Bordeaux, Nantes, Guingamp and Le Havre have all been through it, and their supporters fill stadiums that look nothing like a second tier. The soccer is more direct than in Ligue 1 and less protected by referees, and youth development is central: Ligue 2 is the first professional rung for most players trained in France, and an eighteen-year-old starter is no surprise. Matches are spread from Friday evening to Saturday evening, French time.
