The Nations League is UEFA's competition for European national teams, created in 2018 to replace friendlies with matches that matter. The fifty-four nations are split into four leagues, A to D, by level, with promotion and relegation between editions: a small nation faces opponents of its own standing rather than losing 6-0 to a giant. It is played during international windows, those weeks in September, October and November when the club leagues stop, and that is what makes it easy to follow: when there is no club soccer on screen, there is the Nations League. The League A Finals in June bring the top four together for two semi-finals and a final. It also offers play-off places for the Euros and the World Cup, which gives weight to matches that would otherwise have had none.
