The Welsh top flight, known as the Cymru Premier, is the first tier in Wales. Its defining trait comes before any result: the country's biggest clubs do not play in it. Cardiff, Swansea, Wrexham and Newport compete in the English system for historical reasons, so the Cymru Premier brings together twelve clubs that stayed inside the Welsh pyramid, often from small towns or villages. The season runs in two parts: twenty-two rounds, then a split of the table into two halves of six that meet again. The New Saints have dominated for years and have made the league a recurring route into the European preliminary rounds, which the Welsh champion enters every summer. The grounds are small, often set on a hillside, and matches are played in weather that counts as much as the opponent.
