The Trophée des Champions opens the French season: a single match between the Ligue 1 champions and the French Cup winners, in August, before the opening weekend. Created in its current form in 1995, it is the super cup that travels most. Between 2009 and 2019 it was played outside France almost every year: Canada, Tunisia, Morocco, Austria, China, the United States, Israel, Qatar. A national super cup staged thousands of kilometres from home is unusual, and it changes the evening: a different crowd, a different heat, a time difference for anyone watching from France. Paris Saint-Germain are the most successful club as of the 2024 edition. If the champions have done the double, the beaten cup finalist takes the vacant place. For the viewer it is the first competitive match of the year: new signings starting, the pecking order still open, and a trophy at the end of ninety minutes.
