The Turkish Cup is Turkey's national cup, and it keeps a feature few European cups have retained: part of the tournament is still played in groups, before the knockout rounds. That group phase puts second and third-division clubs up against the Istanbul giants over several matches rather than one, which gives the smaller side time to exist and stops the bigger one from escaping on a single stroke of luck. The final is played each year in a different city, named in advance, which makes it a journey for both camps. Galatasaray, Besiktas and Fenerbahçe hold most of the honours, but Trabzonspor and clubs from Anatolia have won it often enough for it never to feel settled in advance. The winner earns a Europa League place. Matches are played in the Turkish evening, an hour ahead of central Europe.
