The USL Championship is the second tier of American soccer, below Major League Soccer, and it occupies a place Europeans often misread: there is no promotion or relegation between the two, each league being a closed entity with its own franchises. Around two dozen clubs are split into Eastern and Western Conferences, play from spring to autumn, and then decide the title in playoffs rather than on the table. Louisville City, Sacramento Republic, Phoenix Rising, San Antonio and the Tampa Bay Rowdies are among the most established names, and Louisville has built the record that sets the standard for the decade. Much of the competition's interest lies in its geography: it gives a professional team to cities MLS has never served, with crowds that sometimes exceed those of top divisions elsewhere in the world. The league has announced its intention to introduce promotion and relegation with its lower divisions.
